This course is designed to develop a person with little to no knowledge of the HVAC industry into a Heating Service Technician that can effectively and safely perform the required tasks. This class is a total of 80 hours over the course of 2 weeks. There will be a total of 8 hours of testing, including written exams and lab work that the student will be graded on to successfully complete the course. The students will also be required to complete 10 hours of online work through our online portal. Students will have access to our online portal with instructional videos and information for 12 months after the course is completed. ($1,200 value) In addition, we provide an assessment of each student to determine their qualifications against 39 different positions within the HVAC industry. ($300 value).

We have allowed for up to 10 hours of repetitive work done in the lab area depending on each student’s needs.

Students are responsible for bringing all of the necessary tools. Each class will have an associated tool list.

(90 Hours Total Instruction: 80 Hours Hands-On in the Lab + 10 Hours Online Learning Module)

Day 1: Orientation and Basic Electricity
Upon completion of this course the student will be able to:
• Orientation: Dress code, necessary tool inventory, and lab expectations
• Safety: First aid and hazard types
• Lecture: Understanding AC and DC voltages, high and low voltages, motors, series and parallel circuits, thermostats, and schematics
• Lab Skills: How to properly use a voltmeter, and trace schematics

Day 2: Basic Electricity and Practical Wiring
Upon completion of this course the student will be able to:
• Lab Skills: Drawing schematics
• Lab Skills: Using schematics to wire training boards
• Lab Skills: Using voltmeters to check operations on training boards
• Lab Skills: Thermostat wiring

Day 3: Basic Electricity and Practical Wiring
Upon completion of this course the student will be able to:
• Lab Skills: Using schematics to wire training boards
• Lab Skills: Using Voltmeters to check operations on training boards
• Lab Skills: Using schematics to locate components and circuits on live equipment
• Lab Skills: Using voltmeters to check operations on live equipment

Day 4: Electric Furnaces and Fan Coils
Upon completion of this course the student will be able to:
• Lecture: Understanding the components and operations of electric furnaces
• Lab Skills: Using schematics to evaluate wiring in electric furnaces
• Lab Skills: Using voltmeters to evaluate electric furnaces
• Lab Skills: Troubleshooting skills and removing or replacing parts in electric furnaces

Day 5: 80% Gas Furnaces
Upon completion of this course the student will be able to:
• Lecture: Understanding the components and operations of 80% efficient gas furnaces
• Lab Skills: Using schematics to evaluate wiring in 80% gas furnaces
• Lab skills: Using Voltmeters, manometers, and combustion analyzers to evaluate 80% gas furnaces
• Lab skills: Troubleshooting skills, and removing or replacing parts in 80% gas furnaces

Day 6: High-Efficiency Gas Furnaces
Upon completion of this course the student will be able to:
• Lecture: Understanding the components and operations of high-efficiency gas furnaces
• Lab Skills: Using schematics to evaluate wiring in high-efficiency gas furnaces
• Lab skills: Using Voltmeters, manometers, and combustion analyzers to evaluate high-efficiency gas furnaces
• Lab skills: Troubleshooting skills, and removing or replacing parts in high-efficiency gas furnaces
Lab Skills: Combustion analysis and understanding the results.

Day 7: Boilers and their Operation
Upon completion of this course the student will be able to:
• Lecture: Understanding boilers, their components, and hydronic piping
• Lab Skills: Examining all boiler components, and how to clean or replace
• Lab Skills: Cleaning, checking and performing maintenance on 70 & 80% boilers
• Lab Skills: Cleaning heat exchanger and checking combustion on sectional boiler

Day 8: High Efficiency Boilers and their operation
Upon completion of this course the student will be able to:
Lab Skills: Replacing hydronic pump components
Lab Skills: Checking safeties and functions of high efficiency boilers
Lab Skills: Checking combustion and adjusting combustion on high efficiency boilers
Lab Skills: Hydronic piping for high efficiency boilers, and bleeding radiators

Day 9: Troubleshooting, Final Testing
Upon completion of this course the student will be able to:
• Lecture: Troubleshooting techniques
• Lab Skills: Troubleshooting with virtual equipment
• Testing: Final Examination, written and hands-on skill testing

Day 10: Repetition Based Learning
• Student Evaluation: Students will be evaluated on lessons and skills learned over the course and the instructor will determine what areas the students need repetition. Students will be given instruction on individual performance to improve areas that may need additional instruction. The lessons could be based on any of the lessons taught previously throughout the course.

Tool Kit Required:
• 6 in 1 Screwdriver
• 9 Piece Nut Driver or 5/16” and ¼” Nut Driver
• Channel Lock
• Clamp-on Multimeter capable of measuring volts, amps, resistance, microfarads, and microamps
• Digital Temperature Probe
• Electrical Pliers/Wire Strippers
• Combustion Analyzer
• Manometer, or Combustion Analyzer capable of measuring pressure
• ¼” plastic or barbed tee for measuring pressure
• Tool Bag
• Service Ratchet Wrench
• Hex Key insert
• Set of SAE wrenches ¼” to ¾”
• Set of SAE Allen wrenches and preferably a 1/8” tee handled wrench

CANCELLATION POLICY:
Students wishing to cancel must do so by email or personal phone contact at least one week (168 hours) prior to the start time of a class to receive a refund. There will be no refunds for cancellations within one week of the start of the class or if the student fails to show up. Should there be a need for The National Trade Academy to cancel or reschedule an event due to an emergency (extreme weather conditions or otherwise) all attendees will be notified as soon as possible and will have an option for a refund or be rescheduled for an event at a later date.
